Located in Tambun, Jakarta, this 120-square-meter residential renovation transforms an aging house into a contemporary tropical home by reimagining its existing structure rather than replacing it entirely. Embracing an adaptive renovation approach, the design preserves valuable architectural elements while introducing a new spatial identity that better supports modern living.

The primary objective is to overcome the limitations of a conventional layout—characterized by enclosed rooms, limited natural light, and poor spatial connectivity—through carefully considered interventions that improve the quality of space without significantly expanding the building footprint.

A central double-height void becomes the heart of the house, bringing abundant daylight, enhancing natural ventilation, and strengthening visual connections between floors. Public areas are reorganized into an open-plan layout that encourages family interaction and creates a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces through large openings and tropical landscaping.

Warm timber finishes, textured stone, soft neutral tones, and refined black steel details establish a timeless material palette, while integrated storage and restrained design maintain calm and functionality throughout the private spaces. The result is a bright, airy, and environmentally responsive home that demonstrates how thoughtful renovation can create contemporary living environments while preserving the character and potential of the existing building.
